Anyone can present any kind of poetry in any way in the open mike.

The poetry slam is a contest, not a type of poetry. TRY IT!
The slam comprises two rounds. Each poet get three minutes per round. Overtime diminishes score. Highest accumulated score for the two rounds wins. This slam contest is presented in concert with Another Type of Groove where a second slam will be presented at Phillips Hall Cal Poly Thursday November 3 at 7:30pm. Here is an example of the poetic device chiasmus -- IT IS NOT SLAM POETRY, IT IS POETRY SLAM. Slam is not a kind of poetry. Slam is a kind of poetry contest. Any kind of poetry can be used in a poetry slam. The only rule in a slam is that the poetry is performed not read. Therefore, poetry presented in slams is often referred to as performance poetry. Connard Hogan will present some of his pottery creations and discuss his work. Connard will also talk about his upcoming book about his mountaineering experience. He has reached the peak of every mountain in the western hemisphere over 14,000 feet. He has also done Mt. Cook, Kilamanjaro, and others. Retired Psychologist Hogan's recent experience also includes Red Cross work for Katrina victims. He and his wife Janet are very active members of Rotary Club. More info: ourslo.com and 995-3674.
