The poetic history of this area goes back through the Dunites of the Oceano Dunes. They were a small, loose-knit community of bohemians, artists, writers, hermits, hobos and spiritual seekers who lived wild, unfettered and rent-free in driftwood shacks and tents in the Oceano Dunes. Jane Elsdon cared for the last of Dunites in his last days. The Dunites were visited by and connected with swell people like photographers Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, writer and socialite Gavin Arthur, grandson of US President Chester Arthur, Indian guru Meher Baba, musician John Cage, and others.

Earlier on, Upton Sinclair hung out around Oceano. The Theosophists established Halcyon in the first decade. It is said the first Buddhist monastery in the US was near Oceano. Long before that the Chumash exhibited their poetic bent in their stories of their deities. The word, slo from which I named my monthly poetry reading "Slo Deliverance" is the Chumash word for the god, the eagle, with its all-seeing eye. The myths of the Chumash are incredibly poetic.

Deliverance is I Ching hexagram 40 which Karl Kempton threw for us. This is about the explicit form of release from tension; the loosening of structure. The first flash of lightning and crack of thunder signalling the break of a storm.

In the eighties Karl threw the Ching for what became "Corners of the Mouth" a poetry reading which Karl hosted with Kevin Sullivan and continues today. This title is also an I Ching hexagram. It is about providing nourishment.

Do you see how the release of tension and providing nourishment are what poetry does for us?

Before "Corners" Glenna Luschei began Solo and attracted Kempton, Sullivan, David Oliveira, Lee McCarthy and others who promoted poetry in this area. A number of these folks reunited on April 16 where David Olveira gave evidence of his magnificent muse-cal relationship. A line from him: "each person is a letter in a word of a story we are making."
